Landfill tax receipts hit £1billion.

Last Updated: 2 March 11

Statistics from “HMRC”:https://www.uktradeinfo.com/index.cfm?task=bulllandfill&hasFlashPlayer=true show that the provisional receipts from landfill tax exceeded £1billion for the first time in 2010.

Landfill tax was introduced in 1996 at £7 per tonne and has been ramped up to the current level of £48/tonne as an incentive to business to reduce waste going to landfill.

With the steadily rising rate of landfill tax, general waste sent to Landfill peaked in 2001 with 52,465 tonnes (when the rate was £12/t) and was down to 25,736 in 2010 (subject to landfill tax at £48/t), just under half of the waste sent to landfill in the peak year.

Landfill tax is set to rise again this year from £48/t to £56/t on 1st April and may represent half of their cost of waste disposal.
If you have a waste stream in your landfill bin that you can separate, there may be someone out there who will take it to be reused. The easiest place to start is with a free advert on the “whywaste website”: http://www.whywaste.org.uk/ or you could contact us to have a chat.
